Gabriel Coutard was born in Saint-Marc in 1965. His parents were cultivators. He came to Port-au-Prince at a very young age, where his uncle the well-known painter Gabriel Alix, was an art teacher at the Centre d'Art. Coutard attended his uncle's classes and developed a real interest for painting. 1980 was the year he became known for his animal and jungle style.
Coutard also beads Voodoo flags but it is with his paintings that he found success. His work is exhibited in Europe the U.S and Haitian Art Galleries.
