One of the mysteries of 20th-century art is the remarkable outpouring of creativity that has come from a seemingly unlikely place: Haiti.

He was in Mexico from 1958 to 1960. In 1960 he was awarded a scholarship from the French government and lived in Paris until 1962. He returned to Haiti that year, and settled in Croix-des-Bouquets. Gesner Armand was the director of the Museum of Haitian Art at College Saint-Pierre from 1984-1994.

Wilson Bigaud was born in 1928 in Port-au-Prince. At seventeen he walked through the doors of the newly opened Centre dï¿½Art in Port-au-Prince.

Within half dozen years Wilson Bigaud would be among the leaders of the developing Haitian art movement. Under the tutelage of Professor Borno, and along with Hector Hyppolite, Philome and Seneque Obin, Prefete Duffaut and Castera Bazile, Bigaud would begin to turn the worldï¿½s eye toward his work and his island.

Bigaud is rare among primitives in that he portrays real expression in his people. Yet itï¿½s this very detail that validates him as a prime witness of his epoch - so much so that an American art critic has stated, Bigaud is the Haitian Breughel. The French painter Gerard Economos, who knows Haiti well, believes that twenty years from now the most accurate descriptions of Haitian life and times today will be found on the canvases of Wilson Bigaud.
